Make screen time quality time

It's family reading time! There's no better way for your child to build language than reading face-to-face with you. And now, there's a better way!

Note: voice recognition currently only available in Spanish and English. We're working on making it available for more languages. Please stay tuned.

Let's Read together

Reading together is playtime

Screen time, but better when spent together

If we can make screen time something that’s valuable and connecting, I far prefer that as a mom [than] to just passively put kids in front of screens.

Randi Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO, Zuckerberg Media

Early literacy - the first few years of a child’s life - is critical to advancing their language development and can have long-term impacts on their success in school and in life.

A 2018 study led by Harvard and MIT researchers, MRI technology was used to track children's brains while they listened to stories. They found that, during early childhood, children who had more frequent conversations with parents and caregivers had different neurological patterns than peers who didn't.

In addition, a 2017 research shows that these early language development skills are important for children’s longer-term academic success. Gaps in early language development in kindergarten account for a bigger academic achievement gap later in life.

Things you can do

Encourage your child to take the lead in reading

Put your child on the stage. Take turns reading each page. Assign a character to each family member. Encourage everyone to use silly voices and tones to get into characters.

Discuss ideas and share feelings

Talking about the story is a great way to share, discuss feelings, and bolster reading social skills. Ask your child what they think of the story, or why a character made a certain decision. Ask your child what they would do differently in these situations.

Find a time to read together daily

Reading is a fun and enjoyable way to spend family time. Bedtime is not necessarily the only time to read with your child. Consider reading together before dinner, after school, or any time in a cozy spot in the house. Make it part of your family's daily routine, and before long, it will most certainly become an activity that your child looks forward to.
